Science: Rocks Investigation

This afternoon the children continued their studies of our current science topic of rocks.  Previously, the children had learnt that there were three main types of rock: igneous rock, sedimentary rock and metamorphic rock, and had found out how each of these rocks is formed.

Today, the children were asked to research the properties of each of these different kinds of rock by taking part in a carousel of different activities and investigations.

The children sought out different facts about rocks using books and online resources, and also conducted different experiments using chalk, limestone, mudstone and slate.

They tested for density by checking whether any of the rocks floated.  They tested for permeability by using a pipette to drop water onto the different kinds of rock to see whether it was absorbed, and they also checked durability by seeing whether the rocks crumbled or eroded easily.

Finally, they shared their findings with the class.
