Light and Dark

This half term, 3V have been learning all about light and darkness in their science lessons.

We looked at different light sources and learnt about staying safe in the sun.  We learnt that the sun gives out powerful ultraviolet light which can cause skin damage.  We conducted an experiment using some sugar paper.  We took a large sheet of sugar paper and attached a black paper cut out of our class name to it.  Then, we stuck the paper to our classroom window and left it outside for a week!

The difference after just one week was astonishing!  When we took the black paper off, we could see that the sun's rays had bleached the colour of the sugar paper, while the area protected by the layer of black paper had retained something closer to its original colour.

We have also been looking at how light travels, and how shadows are made.  We proved that light travels in straight lines by using our torches to make a beam of light pass through holes in a series of cards.  We have also been looking at which materials are the best at blocking light, and have learnt the terms opacity, transparency and translucency.
