Parliament Week took place during week commencing 13 November 2017, and to mark the event, children at Swan Lane learnt all about the electoral process.
Mrs Vaqueiro led an assembly all about voting: children learnt that, until around 100 years ago, not everybody was entitled to vote in the UK. Only men were allowed to vote! Women didn't think this was very fair, so a group of ladies called Suffragettes campaigned for women to be allowed to vote. Eventually, after a long campaign, women were allowed to vote on equal terms with men.
In order to give the children a taste of what it is like to vote in a real election, a polling station was set up in the library area. Plans are afoot for the Quiet Area of the playground to be revamped over the coming months, and Mrs Roberts was hoping that the children could help her to choose a new water feature. Ballot slips were issued to every child in school, and class teachers brought their children down to vote over a two day period.
Once the polls had closed, Mrs Vaqueiro and Mr Importante carefully counted all the votes and a clear winner emerged! Mrs Roberts has agreed that the winning design will be incorporated into the new Quiet Area.
